Basic Spelling Rules

Use these 3 basic rules to help improve spelling. Read the rules and the examples. Try the practice activity, and check answers.

Rule #1
Plurals

Plurals are words that show more than one.

Example:
    boy - singular
    boys - plural
 

             girl=girls
               witch = witches
             box = boxes
             bus = buses
             kiss = kisses
              child = children
            woman = women
            person = people
            goose = geese
            mouse = mice
 

Rule #2

The combination of the vowels "ie" form a basic spelling rule:
 


Examples:

        belief
        chief
        achieve
        pie

Exceptions:

        receive
        weight
        height

Rule #3

Adding "ing"
 


Examples:
       ride - riding
       age - aging
       slice - slicing
