Adults
learning basic skills from home
May
29, 2002
Adults are returning
to school to improve their skills, but they aren't learning in a classroom.
They are learning at their own pace, on their own schedule, and in the
privacy of their homes.
The Northern Berkshire
Adult Basic Education Program is offering adult learners a new distance
learning program, Workplace Essential Skills.
Working with a teacher
to identify learning goals and track learning progress, students are learning
how to identify job skills, do a job search, prepare a resume, and prepare
for job interviews. Students are also learning how such basic skills as
reading, writing, and math are used in the workplace. These learning areas
are also helpful to students who want to prepare to take the GED exam.
One enrolled student,
Kathy Guertin, says, "I'm able to study at my own pace whenever I have
free time to learn what I need." Kathy says that this kind of learning
is more rewarding and makes her feel "less pressure".
Enrolled students can
build skills by choosing from a variety of learning materials: workbooks,
videos, and Internet activities.
Funded by the Massachusetts
Department of Education, Division of Adult and Community Learning Services,
the distance learning course and learning materials are free to enrolled
students.
If you would like to
