Essay -- January 2005

Table of All Olympics Games and US Medals up to Summer 2006 (MS Excel File)

Hi, my name is Brian. I'm 25 and live in North Adams, Massachusetts. My ethnic origins are Irish, Italian, Holland Dutch, English, and Scottish. I have one brother who will be an occupational therapist. I've worked at Goodwill Industries of the Berkshires Inc. in Pittsfield and Adams, Massachusetts for almost four years as a warehouse packer. My duties are packing wares, shoes, toys, pocketbooks, books, covering the donation area and anything else that needs to be done.

My learning and work goals are getting along better with my co-workers, improve math skills, and keeping on assigned tasks.

My hobbies are collecting military paraphernalia, watching television and movies, surfing the net and I'm a big Red Sox fan!

My one wish is that we can have world peace.

Hester

My name is Hester. Carol is a Goodwill job counselor and one of my co-workers. She tests the clients and asks for a raise for them. She is a good friend for us. She is happy when she comes to us. I am happy to work with her.

Carl was my co-worker on the floor. He is a boss in the home cleaning crew and a good friend. At work all of his co-workers want him back on the floor. Margaret is a friend to me. Carl is a friend to all co-workers. I like to pick on him and tell him, "Stick it in your ear!" Nina and I work with him all day and it's a lot of fun. I enjoyed the work I did with toys. I did a lot of different stuff. I think this is why they enjoy me. We work together as a team. It is easy and laid back at work. It makes the day go by quickly. I have worked with a lot of people at Goodwill Industries. I enjoy every minute of it.

My Family

I have seven children and two are not married. My goals are to read and write and do math. I like doing things. It helps me in my work. I hope to get my GED.

Something Good That Changed My Life

I am going to be a grandmother. This will be my 16th grandchild. We all are hopeful and happy at the same time because it is a good feeling knowing that my son is ready to settle down and raise a family.

Workplace Essential Skills

I would like to see Workplace Essential Skills be introduced nationwide so people who don't have a GED can take a look at it and see what it is about. Workplace Essential Skills teaches important skills.

I started this program in the fall. It helped me to understand how to use the computer so that I can use my own personal computer at home. My whole family has learned something from it too.

I would like to get this message out to people who need to learn what is in Workplace Essential Skills. Everyone has problems with workplace skills. Never say never! If you believe in yourself you can do anything you put your mind to. Children can learn so when they grow up they will have good workplace skills too.

Before I started going to school, I was working for Goodwill Industries. I didn't know the first thing about being able to talk to people. My math skills were weak. Then I started using distance learning to help me to learn new skills to communicate better with my co-workers. My math skills have improved too.

I hope everyone gets to see how Workplace Essential Skills has helped and do the same for you!

Kathy

My name is Kathy. I live in North Adams, MA. I like to make quilts, cross-stitch, and volunteer at the nursing home and use the computer. My goals are to get a job at working on computers and answering phones.

Using distance learning to improve my skills has been good for me. I can work at home at my convenience to build the skills I need. Distance learning puts my home computer to good use. I like attending the Friday morning labs to meet with my teachers and other students. It helps to stay connected with other distance learners.

Michelle

My name is Michelle. I am a single mother of one child. 7 years ago I was confined to a wheelchair after an ATV 4 wheeler flipped on top of me and fractured my spine. Now I can’t move my legs. I made it all the way through high school and had my son in the last month of school.

At age 27 and disabled, I’m ready to start a career. I want to support my son and myself the best that I can. I receive benefits right now to live on but I don’t want that for the rest of my life and I don’t want it for my son. I want to be completely independent.

Because I am disabled I have a lot of personal needs. That’s where the distance learning program comes into my life. I've looked at other programs and always came up to a brick wall. I would have to be in a class room every day for some hours and with my personal matters I couldn’t do that.

With the distance learning program I can work from home on my time. There are even different ways to work with the program and you don’t even need a computer. You can receive workbooks and the teacher is always there when you need help. It’s the perfect way to start searching for the career you want. It's the perfect way for someone like me to start living and being like I once was, a hard working mother making a living to support my son the best that I can.
