George Hastings was another important politician.
He served in the State Senate. Calvin Coolidge was then Governor
of Massachusetts. This is significant because of what happened in
the final days of Coolidge's term as President. Hastings was out
of politics by then, and running a drug store. When Coolidge's train
was scheduled to make a six-minute stop in North Adams, Hastings contacted
the President's Secretary, and arranged to have the train stop at Union
Depot instead of in the railroad yard. Of the 3,000 people in attendance,
Hastings was one of the 3 that Coolidge spoke to.
