Writing About a Process

Activity 1.  Make a jelly and peanut butter sandwich.
  • Put the steps in Column A  in order.
  • Write the correct order in Column B.
  • When rewriting the sentences, use words such as first, second, next, then, after, and finally.
  •  Review your work with your teacher. 
  •  Revise, as necessary, to make your paragraph more clear.

With the jammed slice and the peanut buttered slice facing each other, put the two pieces of bread together. Step 1: 
Place two slices of bread on the plate.

 

 Step 2:
When done making the sandwich, cut the sandwich into four squares or four triangles.
 
 Step 3:
Use a knife to spread butter on one side of both slices of bread.
 
 Step 4:
Eat and enjoy your sandwich while it is fresh.
 
 Step 5:
Take the slice of bread with no jam and spread peanut butter on it.
 
 Step 6:
Spread jam on top of the butter on one of the slices.

Activity 2. Explain a Process

Read about patterns of sequencing used in writing, then complete one of the four writing activities below.

  • Write your paragraph clearly. Make it easy for a reader to successfully follow the directions to complete the process you describe.
  • Review your paragraph with your teacher.
  • Revise, as necessary, to make your paragraph more clear.

1. Write a paragraph that explains how to wrap a gift.
 
2. Write a paragraph that explains how you prepare your favorite food item or meal.
 
3. Write a paragraph that explains a routine household chore, such as doing the laundry or cleaning a room.
 
4. Write a paragraph that explains a process of your own choosing.
